NOTES

In his will, Robert TEMPLEMAN (J640) makes bequests to his sons Robert, Thomas and Richard TEMPLEMAN, Richard being residuary beneficiary and executor, and to John son of Robert TEMPLEMAN the younger, Mary daughter of John TEMPLEMAN and John BOLAND. This may indicate that at the time the will was written Richard was the oldest surviving son, and that his older brother John had already died.

John son of Robert TEMPLEMAN the younger seems likely to have been the John TEMPLEMAN of Witham on the Hill, whose will was proved 1736, Lincoln Consistory. (cf notes on Robert Templeman (J160).)

John BOLAND may have been a grandson of Robert TEMPLEMAN (J640), son of his daughter Dorothy. The will of John SHIPLE (sic) of Carlby (seemingly Robert's nephew), written 28 Jun 1658 and proved 16 Aug 1658, PCC, mentions Dorothy BOULANDS (sic) and her children.

Carlby Registers & BTs: The earliest surviving registers date from 1668, and the BTs from 1562. However, many of the BTs from before 1668 are missing, including the majority from 1562-84, several from the late 1620s and the 1630s, and all from 1640-62.

Some of the BTs seem to have the wrong years entered for the coverage dates given at the top of the page, and there are several instances where there appear to be two different transcripts covering the same (approximate) period. Some of these are also dated at the bottom of the page with the signatures, so the correct years can be deduced from this. However, it does mean that the exact year in which some events took place is open to interpretation, and I have indicated dates which fall into this category with a "?" before the year.

Also, most of the earlier BTs (before c1600) cover a period from Michaelmas to Michaelmas, whereas most of the later ones cover the more usual period of 25 March to 25 March (or thereabouts). Thus, unless the exact coverage of each transcript is noted, there is a further potential for confusion as to the year in which some events took place.
