The information above comes from "A brief account of the Ancient Inhabitants of Grittleton, taken from the Court Rolls" (1740) and the will of John SMART (J4064). In this, after specific bequests to each of his sons, John leaves the residue of his estate to his wife Alice and son Neale whom he makes joint executors, which suggests that Neale was probably the oldest son. No daughters are mentioned in the will.
The surname SMART is sometimes spelt SMARTE or occasionally SMERT.
